The Marshall Birthing Center at Newark-Wayne Community Hospital closed Sept. 3, leaving expectant parents in Wayne County with fewer nearby delivery options, according to the Finger Lakes Times.
Wayne County Administrator Mark Humbert said the closure raises broader concerns about health care in the county, though officials are working with Rochester Regional Health to preserve the hospital’s remaining services.
Retired physician Dr. John Ghertner said families may now face hourlong trips for delivery care and called the loss a major setback for the community.
Newark native Danielle Hagerman, whose four children were born at the center, said the closure could weigh most heavily on families without reliable transportation or substantial incomes.
Hospital President Michael Rulffes has cited low reimbursements, staffing difficulties, aging populations, declining birth rates and falling inpatient volumes among the pressures facing rural hospitals.
