Hobart soccer continued its perfect start to the season Sunday, scoring twice before halftime and adding another goal early in the second half to cruise past Roger Williams, 3-0, at Bayside Field.
The Statesmen improved to 3-0-0 for the second consecutive season, while Roger Williams dropped to 2-1-0.
Tommy Broderick provided the offensive spark with two goals, including a pair that came less than five minutes into the second half. Quinn Phillips opened the scoring in the first minute, backheeling a shot past Roger Williams goalkeeper Eliot Panaccione for his first goal of the season. Will Slayton and La Zai Outerbridge assisted on the play.
Hobart doubled its advantage just before halftime when Broderick headed a corner kick from Griffin Coutts past Panaccione for his second goal of the season. Coutts also extended his point streak to three games with the assist.
Broderick struck again in the 49th minute, chipping a through ball from Daniel Scali over Panaccione to complete the scoring and give him three goals through Hobart’s first three games.
The Statesmen held a 12-9 advantage in shots and put seven attempts on target compared to five for the Hawks. Hobart goalkeeper Jake Hans made five saves in just over 85 minutes before Finn Connaughton entered for the final 4:24 to make his collegiate debut.
Roger Williams played the final 65 minutes with 10 players after receiving a red card.
“It was another good opponent in Roger Williams,” Hobart head coach Shawn Griffin said. “The guys stuck to the plan and closed out the weekend with another quality win to close out a successful weekend. I can’t say enough about how thankful I am for all the Alumni and families that showed up. I’m looking forward to Wednesday’s game against Utica.”
Hobart returns home Wednesday, September 9, to face Utica at 4 p.m.
