Syracuse men’s soccer battled Clemson throughout Friday night’s matchup at SU Soccer Stadium, but the Orange came up just short in a 1-0 loss to the fourth-ranked Tigers in front of 2,531 fans.
The crowd marked the second-largest attendance in SU Soccer Stadium history since Syracuse hosted Duke in 2014. The Orange entered the night with a 3-1 record, while Clemson arrived with a 3-1 mark.
Neither team was able to break through during the opening half, and the deadlock continued well into the second period. Clemson finally found the breakthrough in the 66th minute when Cooper Hineline finished a chance off an assist from Johannes Kack.
Syracuse goalkeeper Kyle Jansen kept the Orange within striking distance throughout the match, making five saves against the Tigers.
The Orange generated several opportunities of their own but could not find an equalizer. Sachiel Ming and Chimere Omeze led Syracuse’s attack with multiple shots apiece as the Orange attempted to break through Clemson’s defense.
Syracuse also earned four corner kicks during the contest, creating additional opportunities in the final third, but Clemson held on to preserve the shutout.
Syracuse will remain at home for its next contest, welcoming former Big East rival St. John’s on Wednesday, September 9. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
