Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer is criticizing proposed Treasury Department and Internal Revenue Service regulations that could strip some educational institutions of their federal tax-exempt status.
Schumer said the proposal targets institutions that seek to ensure access to education for every child, although his statement did not explain the proposed eligibility standard, enforcement process or which schools could be affected.
The New York Democrat accused President Donald Trump’s administration of undermining schools and said federal policy should focus on improving education. He described the tax proposal as part of a broader administration agenda that Senate Democrats oppose.
“Instead of attacking our schools he should be building them up and creating a better education for our students,” Schumer said.
Schumer said Senate Democrats would continue working to preserve educational access and opportunity. The release did not include a response from the Treasury Department, the IRS or the White House, and it did not state when the proposed regulations could take effect or whether a public-comment period remains open.
