Temporary lane closures for state highway and bridge construction projects will be suspended from 6 a.m. Friday, Sept. 4, through 6 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 8, in an effort to ease Labor Day weekend traffic.
Gov. Kathy Hochul said some work could continue behind permanent concrete barriers or when emergency repairs are required.
The suspension is part of the state's Drivers First Initiative, which seeks to reduce congestion and travel delays tied to road and bridge work.
Drivers remain subject to New York's Move Over Law, which requires motorists to slow down and move over for all vehicles stopped along a roadway. State Police and local agencies are also participating in the national “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaign through Monday, Sept. 7, with increased patrols and checkpoints targeting impaired and reckless driving.
Officials urged motorists to obey speed limits, avoid distractions and remain alert for highway workers, emergency responders and maintenance vehicles.
All 27 Thruway service areas will remain open around the clock. Travelers can use the Thruway mobile app for traffic cameras, service-area information, toll estimates, roadside assistance and E-ZPass or Tolls by Mail information.
NYSDOT's 511NY service also provides road conditions, more than 2,200 traffic-camera feeds and links to air and transit information by phone, website and mobile app. Its driving mode can provide audible alerts about incidents and construction along a selected route.
