New York lawmakers are urging Gov. Kathy Hochul to act quickly on legislation that would require businesses to report how artificial intelligence is affecting employment and hiring, according to Spectrum News 1.
The bill would require companies to report AI-related job losses, reduced employee hours, jobs created, positions left unfilled and other workforce changes to the state Department of Labor.
State Sen. Michelle Hinchey said lawmakers need the data to understand AI’s economic impact and develop policies that can prepare workers for changing industries and jobs.
The legislation passed with bipartisan support and has also drawn backing from Upstate United, whose executive director said collecting information before developing broader regulations represents a thoughtful approach.
Hochul has not yet acted on the measure as lawmakers argue that AI is developing too quickly for Albany’s traditional end-of-year timetable for signing or vetoing legislation.
