The New York Yankees bounced back from Monday night’s lopsided loss with a much-needed offensive response Tuesday, defeating the Los Angeles Angels 7-3 behind a 14-hit attack.
Spencer Jones set the tone immediately, launching a two-run home run in the first inning against Angels starter Grayson Rodriguez. The rookie added an RBI single, walked twice, scored twice, stole a base and threw out Wade Meckler at second base with an assist from right field in the third inning.
Jones has homered in consecutive games and continues to heat up after a slow beginning to his major league career. Over his last 15 games, he is batting .348 with four home runs and nine runs batted in.
Jazz Chisholm Jr. followed Jones with a solo home run in the first inning, his 19th of the season. Chisholm finished 3-for-4, while Cody Bellinger also collected three hits. Every Yankees starter recorded at least one hit except Jose Caballero, who went 0-for-5 with three strikeouts.
New York added another run in the third before putting together a two-run eighth. Trent Grisham delivered an RBI single to snap an 0-for-23 stretch, and Paul Goldschmidt added a sacrifice fly. The Yankees finished 3-for-16 with runners in scoring position.
Gerrit Cole protected the early advantage for most of his outing before running into trouble in the sixth. Christian Moore ripped a two-run triple with runners on first and second, cutting the Yankees’ lead to one and ending Cole’s night.
Brent Headrick entered and stranded Moore at third, while Paul Blackburn followed with 1.1 scoreless innings. John Schreiber then recorded a scoreless ninth in his Yankees debut.
The Yankees and Angels conclude their three-game series Wednesday at 9:38 p.m. Cam Schlittler will start for New York against Reid Detmers.
