Two injured after vehicle struck by train in Schuyler County

Two people were hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries after their vehicle was struck by a Norfolk Southern train Saturday morning in the town of Reading, according to the Schuyler County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies said the crash happened around 8:45 a.m. Aug. 30 on County Road 28 near Lovers Lane. Thomas Torpy was driving east on County Road 28 when the vehicle entered a railroad crossing and was struck by a northbound train.

Torpy and a passenger were taken by Centralus Health EMS to Schuyler Hospital. Their injuries were not considered life-threatening.

The vehicle was damaged and removed from the scene by Druker’s Towing. Torpy was later issued two traffic tickets in connection with the crash, though the sheriff’s office did not specify the violations.

State police, the Watkins Glen Fire Department, Centralus Health EMS and Norfolk Southern Police assisted at the scene.

The sheriff’s office said its investigation has been completed.
