A 4-year-old boy died Tuesday after being hospitalized for several days following a drowning incident in a family pool in the village of Phelps, the Ontario County Sheriff's Office said.
The child died Sept. 1 at Golisano Children's Hospital in Rochester, according to an update released Wednesday. Sheriff's investigators said the case remains under investigation and no additional information was available.
Deputies, Phelps firefighters and Mercy EMS were called to a Franklin Street residence at about 5:28 p.m. Aug. 26 after the child was found unresponsive in a pool on his family's property.
The first firefighters and a sheriff's deputy arrived less than five minutes after the call was dispatched. Family members and a neighbor were performing CPR when emergency crews reached the home.
Responders continued lifesaving efforts at the scene for about 25 minutes before the child was transported by Mercy EMS to Clifton Springs Hospital. The sheriff's office said the child regained a pulse while en route.
Hospital staff worked for about an hour to stabilize the boy, and his pulse and blood pressure returned and remained stable. He was then flown by Mercy Flight Central to Strong Memorial Hospital for further treatment and was placed in the pediatric intensive care unit at Golisano Children's Hospital.
Investigators said the child appeared to have been out of sight for between five and 15 minutes before he was found in the pool.
Sheriff David Cirencione credited the immediate CPR performed by the family and neighbor, along with care provided by firefighters, emergency medical personnel, Clifton Springs Hospital, Mercy Flight Central and Golisano Children's Hospital, for sustaining the child after he was found.
