Newark boards to review proposed cannabis retail business on West Union Street

A proposed cannabis retail business on West Union Street will come before two Village of Newark boards in September as Brooklyn Wellness seeks approvals to operate at 510 West Union St.

The Newark Planning Board is scheduled to review the project Sept. 8, followed by the Zoning Board of Appeals on Sept. 14. In both cases, Brooklyn Wellness is seeking site plan approval and a special use permit to operate a retail business involving the transfer, distribution or sale of cannabis.

The property is located in the village’s Highway Business District B-3. The application is being considered under Chapter 170, Article XVI of the Village Code and Local Law No. 2 of 2024.

The Planning Board meeting is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 8, in the Village Court Room on the second floor of the Newark Municipal Building at 100 East Miller St. A workshop is scheduled for 6 p.m. before the regular meeting.

The Zoning Board of Appeals is scheduled to take up the same project at 6:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 14, in the same location, also following a 6 p.m. workshop.

The agendas list Brooklyn Wellness as the only project under review at either meeting.

Neither agenda indicates that the requested approvals have already been granted. The September meetings will give the two boards an opportunity to review the proposal under the village’s planning and zoning requirements.
