Hobart soccer picked up its second win of the season Tuesday afternoon, earning a 2-0 road victory over St. John Fisher in a non-conference matchup at Growney Stadium.
The Statesmen controlled possession and chances throughout the contest, finishing with an 18-6 advantage in shots and an 11-4 edge in corner kicks. Jake Hans played all 90 minutes in goal and recorded the shutout for Hobart.
Hobart generated nine shots in the opening half and nearly grabbed the lead early. Brady Leitner had an opportunity just over a minute into the match, but St. John Fisher goalkeeper Parker Stusek stopped the attempt.
Hans made a key save of his own in the 17th minute, denying Collin Gannon on a free-kick opportunity. Liam Furmansky nearly broke through shortly afterward, sending a 25-yard attempt off the crossbar.
The Statesmen finally opened the scoring in the 39th minute. Gabe Smith picked up a loose ball along the left side, worked around a defender and unleashed a shot from the top of the penalty area. The attempt deflected off a St. John Fisher defender and found the back of the net.
Stusek kept the Cardinals within one heading into halftime, making another stop on Griffin Coutts late in the opening period.
Hobart continued to pressure after the break, but Stusek denied Leitner in the 60th minute. St. John Fisher created a few opportunities of its own as the half progressed, but Hans and the Statesmen defense kept the Cardinals off the scoreboard.
Hobart finally put the result beyond doubt in the 88th minute. Coutts delivered a cross that Leitner finished with a one-time shot for his first goal of the season. Will Slayton also earned an assist.
Hobart returns to action Friday, September 4, against 18th-ranked Brandeis in Waltham, Massachusetts. The match is scheduled for 6 p.m.
