On a recent episode of WXXI’s Connections with Evan Dawson, guests discussed New York’s new Medical Aid in Dying Act and the complex personal, medical and ethical questions surrounding end-of-life decisions. The law, which took effect Aug. 5, allows certain terminally ill patients with fewer than six months to live to seek medical assistance in ending their lives. Hospice nurse and St. John Fisher University adjunct professor Alida Merrill, end-of-life doula Jennifer Sanfilippo and End of Life Choices New York Executive Director Mandi Zucker joined the program to explore how patients and families navigate those choices and preview an upcoming forum focused on the deeply personal realities of dying and end-of-life care.
