Turf toe can sideline athletes for weeks when the largest joint of the big toe is hyperextended, according to Rochester Regional Health.
The injury is common in football but also occurs in soccer and lacrosse, either in one incident or through repeated stress. Symptoms can include pain, tenderness and swelling around the big-toe joint.
Podiatrist and foot and ankle surgeon Dr. Paul Stasko said mild injuries may be treated with rest, ice, compression and elevation, sometimes with a walking boot. More serious tears can require surgery and physical therapy.
Rochester Regional said recovery can take two to four weeks for a low-grade injury and six to eight weeks when surgery is needed. The health system recommends properly fitted cleats and medical evaluation for a suspected injury; its orthopedic urgent-care centers in Victor and Henrietta offer same-day care.
