Syracuse women’s soccer suffers first loss to Niagara

Syracuse women’s soccer suffered its first loss of the season Thursday night, falling 2-1 to Niagara at the SU Soccer Stadium as the Orange dropped to 3-1-1.

Niagara struck quickly and never surrendered the lead. Caitlyn Gratton capitalized on a Syracuse miscue just 1 minute, 30 seconds into the match, scoring her third goal of the season to give the Purple Eagles an early advantage.

The Orange had opportunities to respond, particularly after halftime, when Syracuse generated a more consistent attack and attempted eight of its 12 shots. Vickie Jones, Abby Incorvaia and Anna Croyle each had attempts sail over the crossbar, while freshman Lauren Christy tested Niagara goalkeeper Julia Poissant in the 78th minute.

Niagara eventually doubled its lead with 9:52 remaining. Sarah Lucas found Naiya Johnston in a crowded penalty area, and Johnston slipped a pass to Lucy Trinder, who scored her first goal of the season to make it 2-0.

Syracuse continued pressing and finally broke through in the closing minutes. Sophomore Ali Howard sent a cross into the box, where senior midfielder Moo Galbus finished with 1:36 remaining. The goal was Galbus’ first at the collegiate level and pulled the Orange within one, but Syracuse could not find an equalizer before time expired.

Despite the loss, Syracuse held a 12-7 advantage in shots and earned four corner kicks compared to Niagara’s one. Junior goalkeeper Maggie Manning also made her first regular-season appearance for the Orange and recorded two saves.

The Orange will look to bounce back Sunday when they host Harvard. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
