A Penn Yan woman was charged with endangering the welfare of a child after police said a young child was found wandering alone in the roadway Thursday morning.
Alisha M. Chambers, 42, was arrested after officers responded to Stark Avenue near North Avenue and safely removed the child from the road, according to the Penn Yan Police Department.
Police said the child had special needs and officers were initially unable to identify the child or determine where they lived.
Investigators later located Chambers, the child’s guardian, who police said was unaware the child had been missing for more than 90 minutes.
Chambers was charged with endangering the welfare of a child for inadequate guardianship. She was processed at the Penn Yan Police Department and released on an appearance ticket for Penn Yan Village Court.
Police said the child was not injured and was taken to a safe location.
