New York state and New York City will invest $8.4 million to replace concrete roadway medians in three Queens neighborhoods with green infrastructure designed to reduce flooding.
Projects in Whitestone, Forest Hills and Queens Village are expected to capture a combined 5 million gallons of stormwater annually, easing pressure on sewers and reducing runoff into nearby waterways.
Gov. Kathy Hochul and Mayor Zohran Mamdani said the engineered green spaces will act as sponges during intense rain, helping protect neighborhoods from flash flooding.
Officials said the work should also improve water quality in the East River, Flushing Bay and Jamaica Bay.
