New York is sending 26 pallets of emergency drinking water to Puerto Rico as a drought and aging infrastructure leave about 500,000 residents affected by shortages.
Gov. Kathy Hochul announced the shipment with the Yonkers-based Afya Foundation and corporate donors. The supplies are expected to travel from Yonkers to San Juan and surrounding communities.
Hochul said the shipment equals about 5,900 gallons of water and is scheduled to begin moving Saturday. The city of Yonkers contributed nearly 100 cases to the relief effort.
State officials said the response combines public, nonprofit, corporate and community support while the island works through the continuing water emergency.
