Cayuga Community College men’s soccer opened its 2026 season with a loss Wednesday at Falcon Park, falling 6-1 to Genesee Community College after the Spartans struck first but were unable to slow the Cougars’ offensive response.
The No. 9-ranked Spartans took control early following a competitive opening 10 minutes. Sophomore striker Zander Wishart broke through on a breakaway, giving Cayuga a 1-0 advantage and putting the Spartans on the board first in their season opener.
Genesee, ranked No. 10, answered shortly afterward to even the match before taking control late in the first half. The Cougars scored twice more during the final eight minutes before halftime, turning Cayuga’s early lead into a 3-1 deficit heading into the break.
The Cougars continued to build on their momentum after halftime, adding three more goals over the final 45 minutes to complete the six-goal run and pull away for the victory.
Despite the final result, Wishart provided an early highlight for Cayuga with his first goal of the season as the Spartans began a new campaign at Falcon Park.
Cayuga will look to regroup and earn its first victory of the season when it returns home Sunday, August 30, to face St. John Fisher University’s junior varsity team. Kickoff at Falcon Park is scheduled for 1 p.m.
