A 4-year-old boy remained in guarded condition Thursday after he was found unresponsive in a family pool in the village of Phelps, according to the Ontario County Sheriff's Office.
Deputies, Phelps firefighters and Mercy EMS were called to a Franklin Street residence at about 5:28 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 26. The first firefighters and a deputy arrived within five minutes and found family members and a neighbor performing CPR.
Emergency crews continued lifesaving efforts for about 25 minutes before Mercy EMS took the child to Clifton Springs Hospital. The child regained a pulse on the way to the hospital, the sheriff's office said.
Hospital staff worked for about an hour to stabilize the child, whose pulse and blood pressure returned and remained stable. Mercy Flight Central then flew him to Strong Memorial Hospital for further treatment.
The child was in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit at Golisano Children's Hospital as of Thursday morning.
Investigators believe the child was out of sight for between five and 15 minutes before he was found in the pool on his family's property.
Sheriff David Cirencione credited the immediate CPR by the family and neighbor, along with the care provided by firefighters, EMTs, paramedics, hospital staff and the flight crew, with helping the child survive.
The incident remains under investigation by sheriff's investigators.
