President Donald Trump has temporarily expanded the amount of lean beef trimmings that can enter the United States at the lower in-quota tariff rate, the White House announced.
The change begins Sept. 1, lasts 90 days and allows up to 100,000 tons per month. It applies only to lean trimmings used with U.S. beef to make ground beef.
The administration said the action could increase beef supply by roughly 10% over current projections as domestic production is forecast to fall about 4% from 2025 levels.
The proclamation does not change commitments for countries with U.S. free-trade agreements or country-specific beef quotas. It also encourages eligible imports to be sold at a 25% discount from prevailing import prices.
The White House cited drought, wildfire-related feed constraints and restrictions on live cattle imports from Mexico intended to prevent New World screwworm as pressures on domestic supply.
