New York State Electric & Gas has completed a full rebuild of its Milo Substation in Penn Yan, upgrading a roughly 70-year-old facility that serves 850 customers, including Penn Yan Airport.
The project added a 14-megavolt-ampere transformer and updated five miles of distribution lines to improve electric reliability, resiliency and capacity in Yates County. NYSEG said the new substation can also accept an additional circuit if future demand requires one.
The substation on Second Milo Road was originally built in the late 1950s. The rebuild was funded through NYSEG's rate plan approved by the state Public Service Commission in 2023.
NYSEG President Marc Geaumont said replacing the aging facility was part of the utility's broader investment in the electric grid and would expand options for meeting Yates County's future energy needs.
Yates County Legislature Chair and Milo Town Supervisor Leslie Church said dependable infrastructure is important to residents, local businesses and critical facilities such as Penn Yan Airport. She said the project positions the community for future growth.
NYSEG said modernizing older infrastructure can reduce outages, address capacity needs and support more automated equipment as the grid faces increasingly extreme weather. The utility operates about 35,000 miles of electric distribution lines and serves roughly 894,000 electric customers across upstate New York.
