The Syracuse men’s soccer team picked up an early-season statement win Thursday night, defeating No. 24 UConn, 2-1, at Morrone Stadium.
The Orange established control in the first half, scoring twice in a span of just over three minutes to build a two-goal advantage.
Sophomore Jordan Grey opened the scoring in the 28th minute, finishing a chance set up by Sachiel Ming to give Syracuse a 1-0 lead.
The Orange struck again in the 32nd minute. Freshman Gabriel Oksanen found the bottom-right corner with a right-footed shot, with Grey earning the assist to double Syracuse’s advantage.
UConn responded just before halftime when Elijah Langford scored in the 45th minute, sending the Huskies into the break trailing 2-1.
Syracuse controlled the attacking play throughout the match, finishing with a 13-8 advantage in shots. The Orange also put eight shots on target, compared with five for UConn.
The one-goal lead remained intact after halftime as Syracuse’s defense prevented the No. 24 Huskies from finding an equalizer. The Orange held UConn scoreless over the final 45 minutes to secure the road victory.
The result gives Syracuse an important win away from home against a ranked opponent, while Grey finished with a goal and an assist in his Syracuse debut. Oksanen also made an immediate impact by scoring his first collegiate goal.
The Orange will now return home looking to build on the victory when they host the University of New Hampshire on Sunday, August 23, at Syracuse Soccer Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 5 p.m.
