Schuyler County is urging families to check children's immunization records before classes begin next month, as the county marks August as Immunization Awareness Month.
New York requires children attending public, private and religious schools, including prekindergarten and daycare programs, to receive certain vaccines unless they have a valid medical exemption, according to Schuyler County Public Health.
Public Health Director Jill Kasprzyk encouraged parents to check with their children's doctors to make sure required vaccinations are current. The department said vaccines strengthen the body's immune response and help protect children from diseases including measles, polio and meningitis.
Families can review state school-vaccine requirements at health.ny.gov/prevention/immunization/schools/school_vaccines. Parents with questions, or whose children are uninsured, may call Schuyler County Public Health at 607-535-8140.
The Schuyler County Legislature proclaimed August as Immunization Awareness Month in the county.
