The Onondaga Lake Conservation Corps will host a guided kayaking adventure Monday, Aug. 24, giving participants a closer look at restored habitat along Ninemile Creek and Onondaga Lake.
The two-mile outing will run from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. and focus on birds and other wildlife using the lake and its shoreline. Audubon and Parsons experts will discuss wetland restoration and the lake's role as an Important Bird Area.
Participants will launch from the Honeywell Canoe and Kayak Boat Launch on Pumphouse Road in Syracuse. The event will take place rain or shine, and registration is required because space is limited.
Admission is $25 for participants bringing their own nonmotorized watercraft and $35 with a solo kayak and gear rental. Rentals include a kayak, paddle and life vest and will be reserved in advance on a first-come, first-served basis. Paddleboarders are also welcome.
The conservation corps was founded in 2012 to involve community volunteers in habitat restoration across the Onondaga Lake watershed. The program is now operated by the National Audubon Society, with support for the kayaking event from Honeywell, Parsons and Anchor QEA.
