The New York Yankees received encouraging news about their starting rotation Monday when they announced Carlos Rodón will return Tuesday against the Baltimore Orioles, only to lose another key starter later in the day when Max Fried was placed on the 15-day injured list with a bone bruise in his left elbow.
Fried’s placement is retroactive to August 14 and marks the second time this season the same injury has sidelined the All-Star left-hander. The Yankees did not provide a timetable for his return.
Fried previously missed more than two months before returning July 22. He made five starts after coming back, covering 24.2 innings, before the elbow issue surfaced again.
The 32-year-old has been one of New York’s most effective pitchers when healthy, posting a 2.81 earned run average and a 1.00 walks and hits per inning pitched mark over 15 starts. He has struck out 79 batters and allowed only two home runs across 86.1 innings.
Meanwhile, Rodón is set to make his first start since June 28 on Tuesday after missing time because of left elbow inflammation. The left-hander completed two minor league rehab starts, including a 4.1-inning outing for Double-A Somerset on Thursday in which he struck out seven and allowed two hits.
Rodón was 4-2 with a 3.30 earned run average across nine starts before going on the injured list.
New York has also been without Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton for extended stretches this season, yet remains in second place in the American League East.
