Ithaca Tompkins International Airport will receive $6.5 million in federal funding for the next phase of a facility designed to house and maintain snow removal equipment.
The Federal Aviation Administration grant will support construction of a 23,443-square-foot building at the airport. The fourth phase includes foundation work, structural components and heating, ventilation and air-conditioning systems.
The money comes through the FAA's Airport Improvement Program. U.S. Sens. Chuck Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand and U.S. Rep. Josh Riley announced the funding.
Airport snow removal equipment must be stored and maintained so crews can keep runways and taxiways operating during winter weather. The new building is intended to provide dedicated space for that equipment and related operations.
The airport also received $1.5 million in federal funding during fiscal 2024 for emergency facilities, according to the announcement.
