More than 4,200 new Cornell University students are arriving in Ithaca as student orientation begins for the fall semester.
The incoming group includes 3,681 first-year students and 603 transfer students. Move-in is scheduled for Aug. 17 and 18, followed by orientation activities through Aug. 23.
The first-year class includes students from 49 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, American Samoa and 62 countries. New York is represented by 997 first-year students, and 12.8% of the class are the first in their families to attend college.
Four members of the first-year class have military backgrounds. The transfer class includes 23 veterans.
New students are checking in on campus this year, a change from the off-campus check-in used in previous years. Members of Cornell's Men's Outreach and Community Alliance and student-athletes are helping welcome arriving students.
New student convocation is scheduled for 6 p.m. Aug. 18 at Schoellkopf Field. Returning students are scheduled to move in Aug. 21 and 22.
