Early research suggests GLP-1 obesity drugs may help treat polyendocrine metabolic ovarian syndrome by improving weight, insulin resistance, hormone levels and ovulation, according to The Associated Press.
The condition, formerly known as polycystic ovary syndrome, affects about 1 in 8 women worldwide and can cause irregular periods, excess hair growth, fertility problems and other symptoms.
In one small study, eight of 11 participants lost at least 10% of their body weight, with a median loss of about 42 pounds and a 52% median drop in testosterone.
Researchers said the findings are encouraging but preliminary, and larger studies are still needed to determine how effective the drugs are for the condition.
Insurance coverage remains a major barrier because GLP-1 medications are not approved specifically for PMOS and some insurers do not cover them for weight loss.
