U.S. Rep. Paul Tonko says the Trump administration’s opposition to offshore wind could cost New York manufacturing jobs and economic development opportunities, according to Spectrum News 1.
Tonko criticized federal efforts to restrict or halt offshore wind projects and argued that continued development could benefit steel manufacturers and ports in upstate New York.
An industry study highlighted demand for specialized steel used in offshore wind structures, vessels and port infrastructure.
Iron Workers Local 12 said its participation in Long Island offshore wind projects generated 163,000 work hours and millions of dollars in pension, health and training fund contributions.
The dispute over offshore wind remains unresolved as New York officials continue challenging federal restrictions, including through a lawsuit that is still pending.
