A Bath man was arrested twice in a matter of hours after police said he assaulted a woman, was released from jail with an order of protection and then returned to the victim’s home after stealing a child’s bicycle.
Vincent S. Brand, 39, was initially arrested Aug. 9 after Bath police responded around 12:15 p.m. to a Buell Street residence for a reported domestic incident.
Police said the woman suffered a facial injury, was held against her will and was prevented from calling 911.
Brand was charged with third-degree assault, second-degree unlawful imprisonment and fourth-degree criminal mischief, all misdemeanors. He was taken to the Steuben County Jail for arraignment and released around 6 p.m. with a full stay-away order of protection in place for the victim.
About 30 minutes later, police said Brand was walking south on Rumsey Street when he entered a garage at a residence without permission and stole a child’s bicycle.
Brand allegedly rode the bicycle back to the victim’s home, arriving around 6:46 p.m.
Police said he attempted to enter the residence but was unable to get inside. He then allegedly made contact with the protected person through a window, violating the order of protection.
Brand left the bicycle outside the residence and walked to the Bath Police Department to retrieve a cellphone that had remained in police custody following his earlier arrest, according to police.
At about the same time, the victim reported the alleged violation. Officers took Brand into custody outside the police station without incident.
Brand was charged with third-degree burglary, a Class D felony, along with petit larceny and second-degree criminal contempt, both misdemeanors.
He was returned to the Steuben County Jail, arraigned and remanded with an opportunity for bail.
