Tompkins County needs more attainable housing for working residents and older adults, according to The Tompkins Weekly. A recent panel on Trumansburg Road examined affordability, zoning, manufactured homes, materials and local housing supply.
County Housing and Community Development Director David West said a prior 10-year strategy called for 3,800 new workforce-affordable single-family homes by 2025, but the private market produced 666.
Panelists said local rules and long review processes can add costs before construction begins.
The discussion also covered manufactured and modular homes, land trusts, zoning changes and state programs that could lower ownership costs.
Assemblymember Anna Kelles urged residents to support housing proposals at local government meetings.
