URMC receives .2 million to study exercise, smoking cessation program

Wilmot Cancer Institute researchers at the University of Rochester have received a $2.2 million federal grant to study whether adding physical activity to a text-message program can help more people quit smoking.

The national study is testing a program called Activatexto, which combines smoking-cessation support with a goal of 150 minutes of weekly physical activity. More than 100 participants have enrolled from Rochester and nearby communities.

A pilot study in the Latino community found that 70% of participants had quit smoking after three months while increasing their activity levels. Researchers said exercise may ease nicotine withdrawal, help manage relapse and improve confidence in quitting.

Participants select activities they enjoy, use wearable devices to track movement and receive counseling to gradually increase activity.

The National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities funded the research, which is scheduled to continue through May 2029. People interested in participating may call or text 585-504-9461.
