The national average price for a gallon of regular gasoline fell three cents over the past week to $4.06, AAA reported Thursday.
AAA attributed the decline partly to crude oil prices moving into the $70-per-barrel range and optimism that normal operations will resume in the Strait of Hormuz. Half of the states now have average gasoline prices below $4 per gallon.
The average remained above the $3.80 recorded a month earlier and $3.17 a year ago. Gasoline demand edged down from 9.04 million barrels per day to 9.03 million, according to federal energy data cited by AAA.
Domestic gasoline supplies declined to 209.7 million barrels, while crude oil inventories rose by 2.5 million barrels to 407 million barrels. That level was about 6% below the five-year average for this time of year.
The national average cost at a public electric-vehicle charging station held steady at 42 cents per kilowatt-hour.
