About 1.3 million New York seniors could face higher prescription drug premiums after a temporary Medicare Part D subsidy program ends Dec. 31, according to Spectrum News 1.
The federal program has provided subsidies to insurers since 2024 to limit monthly premium increases for prescription drug coverage.
Gov. Kathy Hochul and other New York Democrats criticized the decision, arguing that it could make medication less affordable for seniors living on fixed incomes.
The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services said the program was always temporary and that most affected beneficiaries will have access to plans with premiums that decrease, remain unchanged or rise by less than $10.
Hochul said New York has expanded its Medicare Savings Program, increasing enrollment by 20% to serve more than 1 million people.
