The New York Yankees (64-50) received a memorable debut from top prospect George Lombard Jr. and another dominant outing from Ryan Weathers in a 2-0 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals (56-58) on Tuesday night at Yankee Stadium. Lombard connected for his first major league hit and home run, while Weathers extended his scoreless streak to 18 innings as New York evened the three-game series.
Weathers continued his impressive run since joining the rotation, limiting St. Louis to four hits over six scoreless innings while striking out six and walking one. His toughest test came in the sixth with two runners aboard, but the left-hander induced a lineout from Jose Fermin to escape the jam and finish his night after 88 pitches. The outing lowered his ERA to 3.79.
The Yankees broke through in the second when Jazz Chisholm Jr. launched a 397-foot solo homer. They missed a chance to add on in the fourth after putting runners on the corners with no outs, but Lombard provided the insurance an inning later, crushing a solo shot for his first major league hit. The 20-year-old became the 14th player in franchise history to homer in his Yankees debut, finished 1-for-2 with a walk and also impressed with several standout defensive plays. Heliot Ramos went 0-for-4 in his Yankees debut, while Luis Garcia Jr. collected his first hit in pinstripes.
Anthony Volpe delivers grand slam, career-high five RBI in return as Yankees sweep Rockies New York’s bullpen navigated late traffic to preserve the shutout. Fernando Cruz, Brent Headrick, and David Bednar combined for three scoreless innings, with Bednar escaping an eighth-inning jam before retiring the side in the ninth for his 25th save.
The Yankees wrap up their three-game series against the Cardinals on Wednesday. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m., with Will Warren (8-5, 4.14 ERA) set to face Andre Pallante (11-6, 3.72 ERA).
