New York veterans, service members and military families can join a free online program Aug. 19 focused on understanding and maximizing federal VA home loan benefits.
The New York State Department of Veterans' Services will hold the one-hour program, part of its Veterans Mean Business series, from 10 to 11 a.m. through Webex. Advance registration is strongly encouraged.
The session will cover how eligible veterans, service members and certain surviving spouses may use VA-backed loans to purchase, build, improve or refinance a home. Organizers also plan to address common misconceptions, homeownership and opportunities to build long-term wealth.
Michelle Viola Straight, executive director of military home loan benefits at ClearPath Mortgage Solutions, will be the featured speaker. The department said Straight has more than 35 years of experience in VA housing, real estate investing and veteran advocacy.
Lessie Branch, the department's special assistant for community engagement and a Navy veteran, will host the conversation. Veterans' Services Commissioner Viviana DeCohen said the event is intended to help military families understand how the benefit can support stability and financial planning.
The program is open to all who served and their families. Registration is available through the Webex event page provided by the Department of Veterans' Services.
