Ryan Weathers tossed seven scoreless innings, but the New York Yankees couldn’t capitalize on his strong outing, falling 2-1 to the Chicago White Sox in 11 innings on Thursday afternoon at Rate Field. The loss dropped the Yankees to 61-48, while the White Sox improved to 57-51 as they earned a split of the four-game series with their second consecutive extra-inning victory.
Locked in a pitchers’ duel for much of the afternoon, Weathers matched White Sox starter Sean Burke nearly pitch for pitch. Burke struck out 10 over six scoreless innings, while Weathers allowed just three hits across seven shutout frames, inducing 11 ground-ball outs with four strikeouts.
Spencer Jones recorded New York’s first hit with a fourth-inning single, but the Yankees managed little offense against Burke. Jasson Domínguez also cost the Yankees a scoring opportunity when he was thrown out after oversliding third base trying to stretch a double into a triple.
The Yankees finally broke through in the 10th when Trent Grisham lined an RBI single to center, but Angel Chivilli couldn’t preserve the lead after a wild pitch and Andrew Benintendi’s game-tying RBI single. New York stranded two runners in scoring position in the 11th after Anthony Volpe grounded out, and the White Sox loaded the bases in the bottom half before Fernando Cruz walked Tristan Peters with two outs to force home the winning run.
Brent Headrick also added a scoreless eighth inning, lowering his ERA to 1.30.
The Yankees remain in Chicago to begin a weekend series against the Cubs on Friday. First pitch is scheduled for 2:20 p.m., with Will Warren set to face Shota Imanaga.
