Thirteen Cornell professors have received National Science Foundation Faculty Early Career Development Awards supporting research ranging from plant biology and artificial intelligence to quantum computing and climate science.
Each award provides at least $400,000 over five years and includes an educational component, according to Cornell.
Recipients include Heather Feaga, Paul Gölz, Giulia Guidi, Laura Gunn, Mohamed I. Ibrahim, Flavio Lehner, Ziv D. Scully, Soroosh Shafiee, Aditya Vashistha, Y. Samuel Wang, Yao Yang, Yunan Yang and Lenan Zhang.
The projects include studies of how ribosomes make proteins under stress, how plants adjust carbon-fixing enzymes as temperatures change and how Pacific Ocean temperatures influence extreme weather in North America.
Other researchers will work on scalable interfaces for quantum processors, high-performance computing for data-intensive sciences, mathematical methods for inverse problems and heat transfer during liquid-vapor phase changes.
Several awards focus on artificial intelligence, including efforts to identify blind spots in AI development, improve the efficiency of model training and deployment, build systems that perform reliably under unpredictable conditions and help private online groups manage disagreements.
The NSF program supports early-career faculty members who show potential to become academic leaders in research and education.
