Hornell will use a federal grant to help buy new body armor for city police officers, according to the Hornell Evening Tribune. The award totals $3,019.82 through the Fiscal Year 2025 Bulletproof Vest Partnership Program.
The program is administered by the Bureau of Justice Assistance within the Office of Justice Programs.
City officials said the money will support the purchase of National Institute of Justice-compliant body armor.
The federal program generally reimburses up to 50 percent of eligible protective vest purchases for local jurisdictions.
Hornell officials said the outside funding supports officer safety while reducing the cost to local taxpayers.
