Yankees salvage split of doubleheader with late win over Dodgers

The New York Yankees (55-44) bounced back from an 8-2 loss in the opener to earn a split of Sunday’s doubleheader, defeating the Los Angeles Dodgers (63-36), 2-1, in Game 2 at Yankee Stadium. After being overpowered by Yoshinobu Yamamoto in the first game, the Yankees pieced together a bullpen effort before Jazz Chisholm Jr. delivered the go-ahead home run in the eighth inning to prevent a three-game sweep.

The day began with another frustrating defeat for New York. Cam Schlittler struck out the first four batters he faced and finished with eight strikeouts over 4.1 innings, but the Dodgers gradually solved the rookie right-hander before pulling away late. Trent Grisham and Anthony Volpe accounted for the Yankees’ only runs against Yamamoto, who tossed a complete game, while Jake Bird surrendered five runs in the eighth as Los Angeles secured an 8-2 victory.

Game 2 told a different story. Paul Goldschmidt doubled and scored on Cody Bellinger’s first-inning RBI single, while Ryan Yarbrough, Paul Blackburn and Brent Headrick combined for seven scoreless innings before Tommy Edman’s eighth-inning homer tied the game. Chisholm answered immediately in the bottom half, crushing a solo shot to right-center to put New York back in front. David Bednar then stranded the tying runner after walking Freddie Freeman, striking out Mookie Betts before retiring Edman to earn his 19th save.

Despite leaving nine runners on base and wasting a bases-loaded opportunity earlier in the night, the Yankees escaped with a much-needed victory. The split also trimmed New York’s deficit in the AL East to 1.5 games behind the Tampa Bay Rays.
