The town of Torrey plans to mark its 175th anniversary with a time capsule that organizers expect to reopen during the town's bicentennial in 2051.
Grant Downs, co-chair of the anniversary committee, told Yates County lawmakers that the capsule is expected to be placed at Washington Square across from the Dresden Hotel and buried in September.
The town will hold an open house from 5 to 7 p.m. Aug. 25 at Dresden United Methodist Church to display collected items and allow residents to sign the capsule before it is sealed.
The Yates County Government Operations Committee advanced a resolution recognizing the anniversary without objection. Organizers said the resolution would be printed on cardstock, signed, sealed and included in the capsule.
Torrey became Yates County's ninth town in November 1851 after Henry Torrey, then Potter's supervisor, renewed an initially unsuccessful proposal during a Board of Supervisors meeting at the American Hotel.
Organizers intend to unearth the capsule 25 years from now as part of the town's 200th anniversary.
