A 29-year-old man is being held without bail after he was accused of breaking into a Corning apartment and raping a 90-year-old woman.
Jonathan Anthony Rivaldo was arrested on felony charges of first-degree rape by forcible compulsion, burglary causing injury, intimidating a victim or witness and tampering with physical evidence, according to police.
The alleged attack happened at about 2 a.m. inside the Dayspring Apartments, according to a resident who spoke with the television station.
The woman was taken to a local hospital, where a family friend said she was in stable condition. Her identity has not been released.
Investigators allege Rivaldo attempted to burn a bloodstained mattress before he was taken into custody. The mattress is connected to the evidence-tampering charge.
Rivaldo was sent to the Steuben County Jail following his arrest. He remained there without bail as of Tuesday.
Residents of the apartment complex told WETM there have been several recent break-ins at the property. Management had not responded to a request for comment as of Tuesday afternoon.
Corning police declined to provide additional information before issuing an official news release.
The charges are accusations, and Rivaldo is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
