Rome man killed in Hopewell pedestrian crash

A Rome man died late Saturday after he was struck by a pickup truck on Routes 5 and 20 in Hopewell, according to the Ontario County Sheriff's Office.

Deputies said William J. Obernesser, 67, was crossing the roadway in a northerly direction near the Econo Lodge at 4232 Routes 5 and 20 when he was struck by a full-size Ford Super Duty pickup driven by Aaron J. Shahin, 25, of Farmington.

Deputies, Hopewell firefighters and Canandaigua Ambulance responded to the area around 11:23 p.m. July 11 for a report of a pedestrian struck.

Obernesser suffered major internal injuries and was taken to F.F. Thompson Hospital in Canandaigua, where he was pronounced dead shortly after arriving, deputies said.

Routes 5 and 20 were closed for about four hours between Smith Road and County Road 50 while the Ontario County Sheriff's Accident Reconstruction Team conducted reconstruction work.

The crash remains under investigation, deputies said.
