Former Butler prison property goes to lumber company

The former Butler Correctional Facility property has been transferred to Wayne County and awarded to Westbury Lumber of Red Creek, according to RochesterFirst.

The Wayne County Industrial Development Agency selected the company through a competitive request-for-proposals process.

Westbury Lumber plans to reuse the 201-acre site for storage and business expansion.

State officials said the company has operated near the former prison for more than 20 years and hopes to reach additional international markets.

The project is part of New York’s broader effort to redevelop vacant and underused state-owned properties.
