Syracuse men’s basketball to face New Haven in season opener

Gerry McNamara’s first regular-season game as Syracuse head coach is set.

The Orange announced Thursday they will open the 2026-27 season against New Haven on November 2 at the JMA Wireless Dome, marking the first meeting between the programs. McNamara returns to his alma mater after leading Siena to the NCAA Tournament in his second season as head coach.

Syracuse enters the season with a mix of returning contributors and transfer additions. Sophomores Kiyan Anthony and Sadiq White Jr. are back after seeing significant roles last season, while the Orange added six transfers to reshape the roster. Among the newcomers are former Temple guard Aiden Tobiason, who averaged 15.3 points per game, and ex-Siena standout Gavin Doty, the 2025-26 MAAC first-team selection after averaging 18.0 points and 6.9 rebounds.

New Haven will be looking to build on its inaugural Division I campaign after finishing 14-17 overall and 9-9 in the Northeast Conference. Coach Ted Hotaling, who owns a 232-201 record over 15 seasons, guided the Chargers to four wins in their final six games last season. Graduate guard Kheni Briggs and sophomore forward Teshaun Steele headline the returning roster as New Haven prepares for its first matchup against Syracuse.
