Claude Cowork AI Agent Launches as Anthropic Expands AI Assistant to Cloud and Mobile

Anthropic is expanding Claude Cowork beyond desktop computers, delivering its agentic AI experience to mobile devices and web browsers. The rollout began on July 7, 2026, with beta access first available to subscribers of Claude Max, then to other plans. This allows users to start work on one device, monitor its progress on another, and get back to finished projects without having to leave a laptop running all the time.

Cloud Sessions Keep Tasks Running in Background

One of the biggest changes is the default experience of cloud-based Cowork sessions. When a user shuts a laptop, tasks will continue to run and scheduled work can run even if no personal devices are online. Sessions and generated files can also be moved between desktop, web and mobile, which makes Cowork more useful for those who regularly swap devices during the working day.

Mobile Access Makes Claude Your Remote Work Assistant

The mobile expansion enables users to monitor long AI tasks without having to sit at a desk. For example, Claude can pull in information from connected services like email, workplace messaging platforms and meeting records before drafting documents or other work products. For tasks that need human jugement or approval, the user can be notified and respond from a phone. The approach makes Claude feel more like an always-on digital worker, rather than a chatbot that only responds when you’re actively chatting with it.

Cowork Is Built for Multi-Step Work

Task delegation is at the heart of Claude Cowork. Users can set an end goal instead of just asking the assistant a question and let the system work across the allowed files, apps and connected tools. The platform is designed to perform multi-step work and return a finished deliverable for review. You still control which folders and tools Claude can access, and you’ll have to approve sensitive actions like deleting something.

Some Features Still Rely on Desktop App

The cloud and mobile expansion does not make every Cowork capability the same on all platforms. Remote sessions are hosted on Anthropic servers and can continue even if the user’s computer isn’t running, but access to certain local files and locally installed connectors may still require the Claude Desktop app to be open. This means the desktop version remains essential for workflows directly reliant on files or apps that exist on a user’s own computer.
