Residents in the village of Weedsport should boil tap water before using it after a water main break caused the system to lose pressure, the Cayuga County Health Department said.
The boil water order was issued July 7 and applies to the village of Weedsport.
The Health Department said tap water should be brought to a rolling boil, boiled for one minute and cooled before use. Residents may also use bottled water certified for sale by the state Department of Health.
Boiled or bottled water should be used for drinking, making ice, washing dishes, brushing teeth and preparing food until further notice.
Officials said the water system lost pressure because of a water main break. When water mains lose pressure, untreated water and harmful microbes may enter the water system.
The Health Department said harmful microbes in drinking water can cause diarrhea, cramps, nausea, headaches or other symptoms. Infants, some elderly people and people with severely compromised immune systems may face special health risks.
Repairs are being made, and once complete, the village will take samples to confirm there is no contamination in the water system.
Officials said the boil water order is expected to remain in effect for the next few days. The Health Department will notify affected residents when they no longer need to boil water.
