Mets reinstate Jorge Polanco from injured list, send Ronny Mauricio to Triple-A Syracuse

Jorge Polanco is back with the New York Mets after nearly three months on the injured list.

The club reinstated the veteran infielder from the 60-day IL before Tuesday’s series opener against the Kansas City Royals, marking his first time on the active roster since April 14. Polanco had been sidelined by left Achilles bursitis and a wrist contusion, prompting a lengthy rehabilitation process that began in late May.

Polanco appeared in 11 rehab games with Double-A Binghamton and Triple-A Syracuse, hitting three home runs while continuing to regain strength before returning to the majors. The Mets have indicated he is expected to see most of his action as the designated hitter, a role he frequently filled before the injury. In 14 games earlier this season, Polanco batted .179 with one home run and two RBI.

To make room on the roster, the Mets optioned infielder Ronny Mauricio to Triple-A after he hit .180 in 17 games. The club also selected right-hander Matt Seelinger’s contract after acquiring him from the Detroit Tigers in exchange for cash considerations on Monday. Seelinger, 31, owns a 3.89 ERA at Triple-A this season. Right-handers Guillermo Zúñiga and Alex Carrillo were designated for assignment as part of the roster overhaul.
