The long awaited conclusion to the Final Fantasy VII remake trilogy has finally been revealed. Square Enix announced Final Fantasy VII Revelation during the Summer Game Fest 2026, revealing it to be the third and final part of the remade saga. Things will wrap up nicely after Final Fantasy VII Rebirth when Cloud Strife’s story will come to a heady conclusion in Spring 2027 when the game releases. While PlayStation 5 players will still get the full adventure, the announcement also signals a huge change in Square Enix’s release strategy, with the title coming to a variety of platforms instead of being a PlayStation exclusive. The reveal promises to be the biggest and most ambitious entry in the remake series, with expanded exploration, new gameplay systems, and the climactic battle against Sephiroth for long-time fans.
Why Is Final Fantasy VII Revelation the Final Chapter?
Final Fantasy VII Revelation rounds out a remake trilogy that started with 2020’s Final Fantasy VII Remake and continued with Rebirth. Square Enix revealed. The new game will be based on the theme of resolve, with Cloud and his friends facing their final destinies with the fate of the planet at stake, director Naoki Hamaguchi said. We’re going to tie together a lot of stories that have been going on for years, including some from spin-off titles, said the dev team. There might be more side stories down the line but the main remake narrative will culminate with Revelation giving fans the full ending they’ve been waiting for.
What New Features Can Players Expect in Revelation?
The reveal trailer had some big additions to gameplay that really opened up the experience. Players will again take control of Cloud and his party as they traverse a much larger world, including the return of the iconic Highwind airship for open world travel. Square Enix also announced the new FITS combat customisation system, more playable characters like Vincent Valentine and Cid Highwind and bigger battles against the legendary Weapons. These additions are intended to make Revelation the largest game in the trilogy, while still keeping the fast-paced action RPG combat from previous games.
What Does the Announcement Mean for PS5 Owners?
The Playstation 5 players still get the full finale on launch day, but the big difference is they won’t be the only ones who get to play the game. Final Fantasy VII Revelation will launch on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2 and PC at once. Remake and Rebirth launched as PS exclusives. This wider release is part of the Square Enix’s new multi-platform strategy to reach a wider global audience. The PS5 is still one of the game’s main platforms, but owners will now get the launch day alongside players on rival systems.
Could There Be More Final Fantasy VII Content After Revelation?
That’s the end of the remake trilogy but maybe not the end of the franchise itself. Revelation ties it all together. Recent listings in databases have hinted at a possible Story Expansion Pass and various DLC packs, but Square Enix has yet to officially confirm any of these. Hamaguchi has also hinted that the character-driven side stories could be developed more upon completion of the trilogy. But for now, the studio’s focus is on delivering a satisfying conclusion that ties together the multitude of narrative threads that have been woven through the remake project.
