The New York Mets erased a late deficit to defeat the Atlanta Braves 7-6 in 10 innings on Monday night at Truist Park, earning a split of their four-game series. Juan Soto’s dramatic three-run homer with two outs in the ninth erased a two-run deficit before Luis Torrens delivered the eventual game-winning double in the 10th, helping the Mets improve their record with a thrilling comeback victory.
Atlanta built a 3-1 lead behind two home runs from Matt Olson while Mets starter Freddy Peralta battled through 4.2 innings, allowing three runs — only one earned — on six hits while striking out six. Rookie Carson Benge provided an early spark with a solo homer and later added a double, but the Mets couldn’t fully capitalize until Francisco Alvarez’s RBI single trimmed the deficit to one in the sixth. Guillo Zúñiga impressed in his major league debut with a scoreless eighth inning, setting the stage for Soto’s game-changing swing. Facing Braves closer Raisel Iglesias with two outs in the ninth, Soto launched a go-ahead three-run homer just inside the right-field foul pole to end Iglesias’ streak of 35 consecutive saves.
The drama continued after Olson’s second home run of the night tied the game in the bottom of the ninth, but the Mets answered in the 10th when Torrens lined a two-run double down the left-field line. Luke Weaver escaped a bases-loaded jam in the bottom half, retiring Mauricio Dubón on a game-ending groundout to seal the victory.
The Mets return home Tuesday to open a three-game series against the Kansas City Royals at Citi Field. First pitch is scheduled for 7:10 p.m. The Mets have not announced a starting pitcher, while former New York right-hander Seth Lugo (3-6, 4.20 ERA) is expected to start for Kansas City.
